The idea of money as a form of spiritual substance takes some getting used to. Most of us don’t automatically look at money as “spiritual”. In fact some religious people, if they are careless about “context” come up with thoughts such as “Money is the root of all evil.” (In fact, the source — which they misquote — actually says: “…the love of money is the root of all evil.”) There’s a difference! However, there is ample reason to believe that God, who is sometimes called the Author of life, wanted us to think about money in a healthy and positive way, and to live free of nervousness about whether our money would be sufficient to meet our needs in daily living. To achieve these ends, He proposed a kind of “money plan” for us to consider. The SPIRITUALITY OF MONEY is all about this plan. Here is what you can expect to find inside this Ebook:
The worst practitioners of pessimism are print and broadcast journalists. When you consider how much of their verbiage and footage is dedicated to reporting and editorializing about human failure, human misery, crime, and underachievement, it becomes clear that they are inherently pessimistic about the human experience.
"My grandmother was born in Russia at a time of great confusion and instability. She emigrated to this country as a young woman and ended up marrying a man who was extraordinarily successful. She could have lived in the fanciest neighborhood and eaten only at the best restaurants; instead she lived in a modest area and would go to Woolworth’s for coffee. In those days a cup of coffee cost five cents, and whenever my grandmother would buy a cup, she would always leave a five dollar tip. Her explanation was simple: ‘They work hard for their money.’"
Worrying about money is one of those things we do where we measure success not in terms of actual results (there usually aren’t any!) but in terms of the intensity of the experience. In other words, the harder you do it, the better the job.
The world of secular money management and investment is fraught with ups and downs. The ups are driven by optimistic expectations. The downs are driven by nervousness and fear. Optimism can fuel expansion, but the “fear factor” can quickly liquidate any profits amassed during good times.
Empowerment is an awareness of abundance. Some persons refer to giving at the level of 10 percent as “sacrificial giving”. The word “sacrifice” can be interpreted as a gesture meant to acknowledge that God is God. If this is what is meant by “sacrificial giving” then the term is most apt. However, if “sacrificial” means an action that results in loss (i.e., a loss of value), then the term is highly misleading when applied to the experience of giving at the level of 10 percent or more (tithing).
It is unfortunate that the message of holy writ has been diluted and fragmented because of interdenominational disagreements, arguments and schisms over issues larger and smaller than the question of how the sharing of our money is a suitable consideration for persons who see the spiritual as pervasive of all of life.
