What Is It about Giving to Another
That Makes Us Feel Good?
WHAT IS IT ABOUT A GIFT WE
RECEIVE THAT MAKES US FEEL GOOD?
Giving is a foundational attitude
toward life. The giver sees the glass as half
full on the way to becoming full.
Thus, the giver celebrates each act of giving as if to say, “There’s plenty
more where that came from (i.e., a spiritual source, God, the author and
creator).
The one who
holds back sees life’s glass as half empty. Thus holding on (i.e.,
to a limited supply) overrules the natural order of giving
as a source for new supply.
To be true, giving
has to be unconditional. A gift is only real when there is no expectation
whatsover of getting something back.
Giving
and the abilities to feel both compassion and gratitude are probably closely
related. Interestingly, it is not just compassion but also the ability
to receive that are important. Research has shown that the ability to
feel gratitude is related to a greater degree of happiness in life.
